Jane Connell, the Broadway, stage, television and screen veteran, who is perhaps best-known for her many roles on the sitcom Bewitched and for co-starring in the 1974 movie Mame with Lucille Ball (recreating her scene-stealing stage role as Agnes Gooch) died September 23. I had the privelege of conducting what might have been her final interview, in the mid-2000s, for my book, Lucy A to Z: The Lucille Ball Encyclopedia. Ms. Connell was lovely, gracious, and even while spilling dirt about the movie Mame, always a lady. She had only kind things to say about working with Lucy and about Ball herself, with whom she found an instant rapport. Although the movie version of Mame tends to stir up heated opinions – you either love it or hate it – one thing everyone agreed on was that Connell gave a flawless performance that was one of the best things about it. She will be missed.
